Money

In the recent months, countries are struggling to curb with the economic crisis that had hit the globe. Dubbed by many as the Second Great Depression, the latest economic crisis which have caused a great amount of problems even for European Superpowers and the United States of America have already impacted heavily on our everyday lives. Prices of daily necessities have steadily increased, with no signs of any halt as people are now starting to be more conscious of their finances. Nobody wants to hit rock bottom at times like this. At times where money is seem to be more valuable than before.

However, the value of money does not necessarily increase during a crisis. Back at World War One, when the Big Four agreed on the Treaty of Versailles, they placed a reparation amounting to 6600 million pounds on Germany. The aim was to cripple Germany, so that she would never be able to rise and attack again. However, the repercussions that hit Germany were much more severe than a mere ‘Never Able to Rise Again’. Germans subsequently refused to work leading to the shortage of goods. Prices of goods rocketed and the Weimar Government printed more money and gave it out to the people hoping that it would prevent the escalation of their economic crisis. With so much money circulating and so little goods, the German Mark lost its value and Germany entered a hyper-inflation. Hence, this example proves that there are times where having an abundance of money might lead to even more severe problems. The Germans had the money but their money had no value.

Money and wealth is probably the reason for the Rich-Poor disparity. Dating way back, the rich-poor disparity has been an ever existent problem in the society. Many people believe that this cannot be helped. One either work extremely hard and get rewarded or laze around and slide into poverty. These are the democratic government countries. In such countries such as the USA or Great Britain the difference between the rich and the poor are almost worlds apart. The rich would be living in a bed of roses while the poor would be sleeping with the rats in the alley. However another group of people - a minor group - believe that everyone should be equal, and there should never be an inequality in wealth and status. These are the communist government countries. When Lenin and subsequently Stalin followed the idea of Marxism, they believed that every company should be nationalized and that everyone should earn the same salary where the amount of hard work put in is not a factor. This ultimately led to unhappiness among the people and the reluctance to work. Therefore, money has certainly brought problems in terms of the rich and poor. While ‘Work for reward, reward for work’ sees a group of destitute people, ‘Equality’ brings about dissatisfaction.

However money can bring joy to people. All around the world, there are many non-profit organizations where the members genuinely wish to help and assist the needy. These organizations receive donations made out of good will and a heart that sincerely wishes to help. When the money is put in to proper usage, and the recipients benefit from these donations, every cent makes a difference. Surely, there are bound to be some organizations that have ill intent, groups that embezzle the donations. However, when we look at how some organizations such as the Red Cross go to great lengths to help the less fortunate, we would then realize that the money did not create a problem. And if we have more of this kind of money, more people would benefit from it.

Money has most certainly given mankind many disastrous problems. Hyper-inflation, recession, rich-poor disparity are just few of the many to name. But if we look at money optimistically, we see that when used appropriately, money would not become a problem but a solution. Fire is a good servant but bad master. Money is to a certain extent, similar in this case. Used wisely and it’s a solution, used with greed and hunger and problems after problems would begin to surface.

Things that make us Singaporean.

Often, we hear people debating on what really makes us a Singaporean. ‘Uniquely Singapore‘, the catchphrase used to entice more tourists to boost the tourism scene in Singapore, speaks of Singapore as whole new experience for others. People nowadays, with technology and science on the constant improvement, have become even more creative than before, aiming to stand out from others. Singapore, like any other individual, is no different. From the Formula One night race – first of its kind – held on 2008, to the up and coming Youth Olympics when Singaporeans dramatically defeated Moscow in the bid, one can witness the effort of Singapore as we try to be different. So just which part of this small island along the Straits of Malacca is different? Where can u find the uniqueness u cannot possibly see in other countries? What makes us Singaporean?

One main difference we possess compared to our neighboring counterparts is the housing system. HDB buildings, first introduced around 1960s, was a response to the problem that Singapore faced shortly after gaining independence – serious housing shortage problem. The HDB buildings shoot towards the sky, allowing more people to stay in a small piece of land. This was useful as Singapore is a small island with land constrains. As many developing countries start to adopt such system, Singapore has managed to maintain its lead is this area, constantly improving the system. The HDB buildings are unique to us as our lives revolve around it. Walk around any housing estates in Singapore and you would be greeted by buildings of height ranging from 4 storeys to 25 storeys.

Another factor that allows us to easily identify a fellow Singaporean would be ‘Singlish’, the Singaporean version of English. Singlish is unique to us as it’s truly spoken only by a Singaporean or a person who has strongly absorbed the culture of Singapore. Therefore if one is a Singaporean, I feel that he or she would to a certain extent have some form of Singlish in their speech. Singlish, an off product from the many dialects and languages that create Singapore, have most certainly taken over proper English. Upon entering Singapore, a foreigner who converses with the nearest local would almost chance upon his first encounter with Singlish. How unique is Singlish then? First off, it’s Singaporean-English, showing that it truly belongs to us. Furthermore, it would be practically impossible to find another individual speaking with made up words such as ‘meh’ or ‘lar’ flowing out of their mouths. Hence, we can safely count Singlish as something unique and that it truly makes us Singaporean.

Yet another element that makes us a Singaporean would be the whole idea of ‘Kiasu’. Kiasu, another Singlish term, means to be afraid to lose. Singaporeans do have a strong ‘Must-not-Lose’ mentality. This attitude of ours is often displayed in many occasions, especially when certain benefits are involved. Be it multi-million dollar benefits or just a mere dollar, many typical Singaporeans would risk their limbs just to be the one to attain that little advantage. The annual Great Singapore Sale would be just one of the many situations where Singaporeans’ inner ‘Kiasu Monster’ would arise, battling each other for certain goods. Even before the sale, long queues would snake around the building, counting down to the time when the doors are unlocked. This certainly would be a rare sight in other countries when gracious and gentlemanly/lady-liked behavior outweighs the Kiasu Mentality. Another example would be the amount of pressure children are receiving as parents often compare their child in having more tuition, better grades, and more achievements et cetera. At such young age, Singaporeans are exposed to the reality of an ‘Afraid to lose’ society.

Ultimately, the definition of a true Singaporean could range between people. However, not necessarily something that makes us Singaporean is good, and should be encouraged for further generations. Things such as the Kiasu mentality on the long run would be unhealthy and therefore, something that makes us what we are would not be good to a certain extent.

The street was bustling. To and fro, people were rushing home from work in all four directions. Juliet McBride knew that this was perhaps the best time for her to get some money. Money for food. Food for more strength to get more money. That was the vicious cycle that the once stuck up, snobby Juliet McBride had fell so deeply into.

There were so many people. Surely, a Good Samaritan would be lurking out there, and should she be lucky, she would not be hungry for that night. That was the thought that Juliet McBride held tightly as she shamelessly threw herself at every passing stranger’s feet, kneeling and begging just for some loose change. The thought of be able to fill herself with bread and water. Every cent counted. Every little cent would just make that huge amount of difference.

Juliet McBride pulled out a dusty pouch from her tattered jacket. The pouch made a loud rattle sound as Juliet emptied the contents onto the stone hard floor of the alley. One or two coins attempted to break free within the boundary of her shrivelled hands. Her hands were shivering furiously, showing signs of cold as she reached out for the mere ten cents that had rolled into the drain. Without hesitation, she stuffed her hand into the murky, cold, drain. Calling the drain dirty would do it unjust. Every night, drunken men would puke into it while stray beast would also empty their bowels into the ‘pet’s toilet’. She groped in the dark, trying her best to retrieve the ten miserable cents.

At last, Juliet McBride managed to feel the coin. The coin felt so warm in her hand. A smile erupted from her face. Carefully placing the coin it its rightful place, she counted her money. One dollar and twenty two cents. With a sense of assurance in her, she carefully placed the coins back into her ragged pouch, which she then tied it to her hand with a torn shoelace. A double knot, tied twice. Assuring that a pouch was safely joined to her hand, she stood up, mustering as much energy as she possibly could, and walked out of her ‘home’.

Blast of a day.
For i created a new wallet which cost roughly 80bucks in total.
ezlink and library card shld not be so expensive.

im having problems with differentiation.
cos when i write v, it looks like my r and vice versa.
so when i write dv / dr,
and i carry on with the other steps, i forget which is v and which is r.
lol.

my only free day without cca is like a day filled with suay-ness.
forget about it.
theres performance tmr. i love performance. cause its like a 15min thing then THE END.

Saturday seems so much like a school day.
Remedials and cca would be taking up the entire holidays.
Cant even count it as holidays.

Had chi and maths today.
Was practically a full school day.
8am-1pm.

Sudden urge of blogging. But have nothing much to blog about unless i rattle about how boring remedials are. Especially chinese. I just cannot stand chi remedials. How on earth does one stay awake during chinese? Although i managed it, but it does not prove much.

X-country ytd was a blast.
Ran with Edward and Phillippe.
Phillippe won anyways without me helping much. On the other hand, Edward, with my extra point, still lost.
I was the Phillippe flag-bearer. Quite cool to run to the finish like with half the world cheering for you even if you are 1 of the last. Some guy even said ,' I thought he just now run for us le?'
LOL. Oh and the other half was thinking what an idiot i was running twice.

Had choir after running 6km. IMAGINE HOW BLOODY TIREDD AND SHAGGED I WAS.

today kinda suck cos i keep getting stomachaches during the papers and when the exam is over, the pain would subside. Worse still i dint finish any of the papers today.
emaths was relatively ok while geog was relatively not-ok. i am already prepared to screw up for geog. Im like hoping for those random marks that might just help me scrape through. Like those stupid marks they give cause you have maybe like 1 point out of a 3 point essay and the ke lian ni. haha.

Just finished another history essay. tiredd.
Had chinese remedial for a mere 15mins or so today. me and andrew were late and less than 15min after we entered, fumigation smoke entered the room from the windows that lindanwen cleverly opened to air the stuffy room. HAHA. wanglaoshi was like shouting, ' Bu yao huang!'

The smoke, though smelled bad and was ABIT harmful, many idiots were like desperately trying to pack their bags and rush out of the room. some even cover their noses with their shirt.
To add on to the spectacular 'show' , the fire alarm went. HAHA/
so then the teachers decided that the smoke was not gonna clear anytime and released us home. HAHA. so basically i went there just to take attendance.

Oh yea. Today on the bus, Cao Sheng Mao offered his seat to an old man. Makes me ponder about the way we talk about china scholars and how we keep calling them mugger dogs. Apparently this ' mugger dogs ' not only have better grades than a hell lot of us, they( or he) also have EQ which is much higher than us. and it was not as if he was sitting on the aisle seat. He was at the window seat but still took the trouble to stood up, which was possibly a hassle, considering the fact that he had bags and stuff. Its this kind of small actions that makes the difference between us and them (we know ourselves well enough that we pretend not to take notice of people in need of a seat), and not the 10A1s that make the large difference.

And this morning, on the bus again, a girl picked up a handphone and started asking around whose was it, obviously showing that its not hers. mrheng should ask us to do an essay on ' Random Act of Kindness ' instead of ' Obsession '.HAHA.

What would we/you have done if we/you happen to be stuck in a similar situation? To pretend to be asleep and ignore everyone and everything? Or to be like this two people - students as a matter of fact - and shower signs of concern. Both events occurred late in the evening and early in the morning respectively, when students are felling the most lethargic during the day. To ignore would be easy, while to step up and help would take a certain amount of courage. Courage to help. Courage to care. This are people that i respect deep in my heart.

I did the Napoleon/Wellington compre although i skipped the summary and the Oxford one also without summary too. Lazy to do.

Today is totally crappy in a good way.
During MORN ASSEMBLY, Nathan shared his wise words with me.

then we had some china performance by some super power ppl.
according to LHB, they performed to the Queen of England.
was wondering how the heck did the school come up with money to match the queen to get them here.
JonathanKoh was saying that the china group had send in their reserves to perform cos we cfm nvr pay as much.
So the 'reserves' were like super power especially the juggler.
If there is an actual juggler which is better than the 'reserve', maybe he can juggle ivan, james and joseph together.HAHA!
OHYEA! and the male ballet guy got a damm big lp.

Half day school. I WAS RIGHT.3 ppl never come. IM LIKE SUPER CHAIRMAN?! i noe the attd the day before.
Double chem and one mass level talk.
During chemSPA, james took 3 splinter, lighted it, and started praying to darrence.
Then darrence, being a buddhist/taoist felt insulted.
Free ice cream.

After school, matthew, james and i went to get __________'s birthday present.Got _________( bday boy) a _________( cnnt say).
Went for lunch at kfc. Somebody suggested we go sit beside bishan gay.LOL! I action action first one to walk up to the table beside him but then chicken out after looking at him staring at us.

Followed matthew to the bishan north street soccer court.
wait like quite long before i played a match.
Me, KaYue, Tim and Kopi against some army guys.
Then i randomly used my left foot to kick the ball somewhere so that some random guy could get it. However, it was not meant to be! Due to the boundaries around the soccer court, the ball somehow deflected off the walls of the court and went into the opposition goal.
SO I SCORED! =p.

Then cheok and kentay all cheer for me untill i blushed.HAHA! And lewistan said sth like i play pool soccer or sth.SUPER COOL.

Lastly, i received $312 worth of angbao.Not very WOW.

Iceland becomes the first victim to be subdued by the credit crunch. This would require it to accept harsh measures to restore fiscal and monetary stability...
Currently the government has seize control of the last three major banks and shut down stock exchange.
Arsaell Valfells, a professor at the University of Iceland said,'Iceland is bankrupt.'
Iceland first measure was to approach Russia for help in the form 4 Billion Euros but currently no agreement has been reached.
Even though they did not plan to get IMF help immediately, Richard Portes, an economist who studied the situation feels that the IMF would be the only thing that Iceland can rely on.
But with the help of the IMF, once the situation stabilised, Iceland would have to discard the krona( Iceland's currency ) and adopt the euro.
However, Iceland is not part of the EU. Thus it raise concerns about an external country sharing the same currency as the EU.
But using the euro currency could expose another problem for them due to the lack of reserves the country's bank have to defend the currency if a renewed attack was launched on the currency.
Therefore, Iceland's last option would be to apply and join the EU to restore the country's economy and to maintain the possibility of usage of the euro currency in Iceland.

Thus, the final question would be : Would Iceland join the EU even though the current political party is against it? Would the economic crisis be a catalyst that cause the country's leaders to do something against their wish?
